The owner of Alkem group of companies and leading industrialist of Bihar Shri Samprada Singh died following protracted illness at Leelavati Hospital in Mumbai. He was 94. Samprada Singh, who was a valued company worth more than Rs. 26,000 crores on the strength of his hard work and ability, used to work as an employee in a chemist shop.
In 1953, Mr Singh opened his first business, a small medical retail store in Patna. Seven years after opening the store Mr Singh felt it wasn’t enough. He started a business of pharmaceutical distribution in 1960 under the banner of Magadh Pharma. During these years he started establishing links with doctors and senior executives from major pharma companies. Realising how limited were opportunities for the distribution business in Patna, he moved to Mumbai, where he decided to set up his own pharmaceutical company under the name Alkem Laboratories.
He was also included in the list of India’s richest people, released by Forbes many times. He went ahead with Anil Ambani in the ranking in 2017. Forbes ranked him in the list of billionaires in the world in 2018. In Forbes’ ‘The World Billionaire’s List 2018’, Sanprada Singh was at number 1,867 with a wealth of $ 1.2 billion. Singh had founded pharma company Alchem 45 years ago. Mr. Samprada Singh was one of the co-founders of the Company and pharma industry veteran with over 43 years of experience in Indian pharmaceutical industry. He has received various prestigious awards such as the ‘Life Time Achievement Award’ by Pharma Business and Technology in 2000, the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the Pharmaceutical Leadership Summit 2009, ‘Asian Grid Leadership Lifetime Achievement Award 2006’, the ‘Life Time Contribution Award’ by the Express Pharma Excellence Awards in 2004 and ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at the 2nd Annual AWACS Awards in Marketing Excellence, 2015. He was also bestowed with the EY Entrepreneur of the Year Award in Life Sciences for the year 2016. Recently he was awarded with the Bihar Pride Achiever 2017 Award at Rising Bihar 2017 summit and the Global Asian of the Year 2017 by Indian Singapore Business & Social Forum 2018.
