Regional Consultation On Indian Systems of Medicines: Challenges and Best Practices

The Forum on Indian Traditional Medicine FITM organised its first Industry Consultation on Global Promotion of Indian Systems of Medicine at Westview Hall, Davanaman, Sarovar Portico, Bengaluru, on 20/03/2019. Vaidya Shri Rajesh Kotecha, Secretary, Ministry of Ayush was the Chief Guest.

FITM was launched in 2017 by the Ministry of AYUSH and RIS with the objective of promoting the Indian Systems of Medicine (ISM). By bringing together industry, policy makers, and academia under one platform it aims to encourage detailed analysis of broad trends in the traditional medicine sector and contextualise Indian policies by facilitating discussions across issues that impact its holistic growth and acceptance.

The Consultation brought together industry, trade, and policy representatives. Policy recommendations at this Consultation emphasised on greater efficiency in trade facilitation mechanisms and exploring newer markets for export of Indian Systems of medicine (ISM) products and services. More importantly it emphasised on the criticality of subscriptions to relevant standards and quality control mechanisms for medicinal plants, products and services in the AYUSH sector.

The AYUSH sector in some states has demonstrated better performance as compared to others. The idea of a regional consultation arises from this recognition of critical role of actors located in states. Seeking opinions of industry and policy makers at the regional level is also imperative for a broader understanding of issues, challenges and prospects of the sector.
