Mumbai Dabbawala case study presented in IDMA GSB AGM

Dr. Pawan Agrawal has taken Mumbai’s semi-literate dabbawalas, suburban trains, and packed home food (tiffins) to a global case study on Six Sigma. He is the author of ‘Dabbawala of Mumbai : Masters of Supply Chain Management’. He has done a case study on the dabbawala’s logistics and supply chain management efforts and has made more than 200 presentations in India and abroad. He presented interesting case study of dabbawalas in the Annual General Meeting of Indian Drug Manufacturer's Association (IDMA-Gujarat State Board).

Around 5,000 dabbawalas travel over 60 to 70 km daily to deliver over 1 lakh lunchboxes across Mumbai, and have earned a reputation for their meticulous operations, integrity and honesty. In the last 125 years, there has not been a single instance of a lunchbox that has not been delivered to its destination. Come rain or shine, heavy crowded local trains or Mumbai traffic, the lunch box is pick

ed up from home and delivered. Strong integrity in dabbawalas is due to recruitment via reference only, he said.
