The Centre plans to bring a new pharmaceutical pricing policy, a move expected to cut prices of medicines and various other pharmaceutical products in the country. Sources said the policy is expected to be stricter and in line with PM Narendra Modi's directive of making drugs affordable for the poor. The policy is also likely to bring more products under its purview. The Centre's think tank, the Niti Aayog, and the department of pharmaceuticals (DoP) have already started deliberations in this direction. The policy will replace the existing National Pharmaceutical Pricing Policy, 2012 - which forms the core of the Drugs Price Control Order, 2013 and hence drives prices of all essential medicines as well as many other pharmaceutical products including stents and medical devices.
